Orange Tabby Cats Usually Male
But what does that mean for orange cats.
Orange tabby cats usually male. He was very smart and curious. Orange tabby cats are about 8020 male to female. Any cat male or female can be orange but in males the color is nearly always expressed in the tabby striped pattern sometimes called a ginger tom.
However male tabbies indeed take up a higher percentage of the tabby population at 80. And its not some sort of magic its genetics. We have many female orange tabby cats in my practice.
Females can be orange tabby calico or tortoiseshell. Calico and tortoiseshell cats however are almost always female. While its true that a higher percentage of orange tabbies are male the ratio is actually about 80 percent male to 20 percent female.
The X chromosome is the reason for the orange coloring. Thus both the mother and father cat must pass on the genes to the female but males only need the trait from their mothers. Did you know orange tabby cats are typically male.
But as we know ginger tabbies are predominantly male. Well theyre usually laid-back friendly cats who love to be with their pets and their people. Orange tabby cats are almost all male.
This gives the impression all orange cats are male when this isnt actually the case. Male cats only need to inherit one copy of the orange tabby gene while females need two this is why orange tabbies are male three times more often than female. Sometimes these combinations seem surprising.
